In order to assess and coordinate solutions to illegal charcoal production, the Corpoguajira team Closer to the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira traveled to the community of Cucurumana, where the concerns and social problems were presented by several Wayuu indigenous communities of the District of Riohacha, and likewise the Corporation informed them of the negative consequences that this practice causes to biodiversity.
This problem is triggered by the exploitation of forest species that the indigenous people have been doing to manufacture charcoal and sell it massively for export to other countries., benefiting financially. What is considered in Colombian territory as an illegal activity, for the damage it causes to nature.
Corpoguajira has the firm intention of establishing a control mechanism with which it is possible to guarantee that the exploitation of forest species is only for domestic use.. So it was scheduled for the next 9 October, a consultation table with the main council of palabreros and traditional authorities, with the purpose of defining the consultation mechanisms with a view to the formulation of the forest management plan in indigenous communities.
It is important to highlight that the production of charcoal brings with it consequences that affect the biodiversity of the region., such as the loss of the habitat of innumerable species, the emission of greenhouse gases and the acceleration of climate variability, contributing to desertification and drought, inter. That is why from Corpoguajira we seek to agree on solutions with the indigenous Wayuú, to mitigate this problem.
