
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, he said 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming, an initiative promoted by the World Rural Forum and supported by more than 360 civil and peasant organizations from all continents. Its celebration aims to become a tool for the promotion of active policies in favor of the sustainable development of agrarian systems based on the peasant family unit., communal, indigenous, cooperative, and fishing.
All this from the perspective of the effective fight against poverty and hunger, as well as the search for a rural environment based on respect for the environment and biodiversity.
Family farming is a way of classifying agricultural production, forestal, fishery, pastoral and aquaculture, managed and operated by a family and primarily dependent on family labor, including both women and men.
The goal of this celebration is to reposition family farming at the center of agricultural policies, environmental and social issues on national agendas, identifying opportunities to promote a change towards more equitable and balanced development. Additionally, broad debate and cooperation at the national level will be promoted., regional and global to increase awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by smallholder farmers, to identify effective ways to support these communities.
