In days gone by the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideas) it gave warning to certain departments of the Colombian territory on the possible occurrence of forest fires. In the country 20 departments are more alert, in the case of La Guajira, Magdalena, Cesar North, Bolivar and Atlantic, where previous years there have been strong emergencies during the dry season; noting that the 29,97% of the territory it is in high probability.

Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira alert local authorities and the management committees of the municipal risk to activate contingency plans to this phenomenon that can affect the fauna and flora of the department including preventive actions, mitigation and education which would enable the risks and effects on ecosystems.

In 2019 They were more affected by 6.200 hectares of forest in the department of forest fires including strategic ecosystems that are water factory for different municipalities in which more mountainous and vegetation cover as the RFP Montes de Oca areas are, DMI Serrania de Perija, DMI Cerro Bañadero and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Measures to prevent damage from forest fires

• Restrict agricultural burning, campfires and any activity that may generate.
• Do not throw lit cigarettes or matches in rural areas or near forests.
• Do not throw waste, bottles or glasses can initiate fire.

Therefore, since the Corporation is made a call to all residents and businesses of the peninsula, because of the possible decline in river levels, which greatly affect water supply in the region; considering it as a finite and vulnerable resource, essential to sustain life, development and the environment.

Implement actions to conserve water resources in the region

- Close the faucet while brushing teeth and wash hands.

- Take short showers and turn off the water while soaping and apply the shampoo.

- Use the washing machine with a full load, Do not wash single items, spends more each load 200 liters.
