INTERINSTITUTIONAL ARTICULATION TO COMBAT TRAFFIC AND CONSUMPTION OF SEA TURTLES IN LA GUAJIRA

In order to articulate actions aimed at counteracting the scourge of capture, commercialization and consumption of sea turtles in the department of La Guajira, an inter-institutional meeting was held where mayors, National Police, Attorney and the Corporation
Autonomous Regional of La Guajira, They presented the needs and proposals that will reduce the occurrence of this environmental crime.

Historically, the department of La Guajira has been a territory that due to cultural and gastronomic aspects has included the consumption of turtle meat as well as the commercialization of the shells of some of the species that reach this region of the
continent due to need for food, spawning and mating. Additionally, the department is a region that due to its geographical position and high diversity of food supply, records the presence of five of the six species that arrive in Colombia.

This great scourge that dramatically affects the balance of our ecosystems, It deserves the urgent coordination of the competent institutions in order to give results of impact that allow us to increase the chances of conservation of this important species.

Actions such as extreme controls at the capture sites and on the department's roads, form the inter-institutional committee to control the illegal trafficking of wild species, characterize and analyze the structure and dynamics of prohibited activity, develop cartographic bases to identify routes and specialization of the illicit, environmental education strategies, in addition to implementing joint monitoring and control schemes and strategies between CORPOGUAJIRA, Police and National Army Prosecutor's Office and territorial entities, were some of the proposed actions.

"It is urgent to advance in giving forceful and effective blows against the crime of hunting, transporte, commercialization and consumption of sea turtles that dramatically affects the balance of the ecosystems of La Guajira and the region, We have called on all institutions with the
competences in this problem so that the necessary actions are articulated to eradicate this crime ", Samuel Lanao Robles pointed out, General Director of the Corporation.
