So air quality was recorded in the mining corridor La Guajira

The contribution of emissions did not exceed the provisions of Colombian regulations. Corpoguajira made recommendations to have an efficient environmental control in the area.

By Juan José Penaranda Arregocés

Through Monitoring Air Quality Program, Corpoguajira constantly determines the degree of contamination or contribution of particulate matter by the operators of coal, settled in the region. In this sense, during the first half of 2014 were obtained 60 Samples, stations that make up the system for monitoring air quality of the environmental authority.
By studying Corpoguajira established that during the period under review did not show a significant contribution of particulate emissions from coal, however some stations showed an increasing trend in relation to the daily norm. Corpoguajira recommended adopting measures by mining companies, to have an efficient control over this situation.
Considering the dry season, environmental authority considers important to intensify the risks both paths to active pits and dumps, which are very close to population centers, in addition, suggested to Carbones del Cerrejón Limited, the possibility to temporarily suspend mining activity in some pits, and the disposal of waste rock dumps in some nearby populations Barrancas, Las Casitas and Provincial, as to decrease the contribution of particulate material into said populations.
With respect to emissions of gases and ashes, product of spontaneous combustion of coal seams, Corpoguajira considers it appropriate to increase the number of crews to respond more efficiently this problem, in order to seal the fire outbreaks that contribute significantly to global warming.
