The contribution of emissions did not exceed the provisions of Colombian regulations. Corpoguajira made recommendations to have an efficient environmental control in the area.
Through Monitoring Air Quality Program, Corpoguajira constantly determines the degree of pollution or contribution of particulate matter by coal mining companies located in the region.. During the 2012 they were placed 2008 filters, in the stations that make up the Air Quality Surveillance System of the environmental authority: Hatonuevo, Barrancas, Rock, Chancleta-Pin, Los Remedios, Provincial, Papayal, Rabbit, Las Casitas, Cuestecitas, Cañaverales, El Tablazo, New site, Fonseca, India, Uniguajira, ICBF, Corpoguajira, Mayor's Office of Maicao and La Finquita.
Through this study, Corpoguajira established a significant contribution of carbon particle emissions during the previous year., However, the results did not exceed what is contemplated in the country's environmental regulations.. Despite the above, it is important that measures be adopted by mining companies, to have an efficient control over this situation, especially in the dry season.
Corpoguajira made some specific recommendations, Among them stand out: stop disposing the waste material in landfills that have direct influence on Las Casitas, Provincial and Barrancas, since some of these are located less than 5 Km away from these locations. The environmental authority also considers it important to intensify irrigation both on the access roads to pits and active dumps., which are very close to population centers. Another requirement is the backfilling of pits that are no longer in operation and make efforts to reduce the number of fires in coal seams, since they contribute to global warming and react with water vapor causing acid rain.
During the 2013, Corpoguajira intensify the monitoring of air quality in the mining corridor department, to ensure the conservation of the environment and the health of the inhabitants of the peninsula.
