AVANZA SUCCESSFULLY ARROYO DUCTING MAJUPAY

Ecodato: Channeling benefits 20.499 Inhabitants of 18 districts of the municipality of Maicao.

Given the environmental crisis presented by blockage in the stream Majupay, Corpoguajira implemented the project Adequacyón and cleaning of the Majupay stream between the Majupay and Villa Amelia neighborhoods 2 in the municipality of Maicao, La Guajira".

The above because the contamination is evident, when it is nourished in winter times, becoming a vector of diseases for the community in general, the contamination of the soil by the garbage that is thrown around the stream and in its channel, changing the chemical composition of the soil and obstructing the germination and growth of vegetation, in addition to air pollution from the decomposition of organic matter, the frequent fires and the waste and bacteria that are dispersed by the wind.

This project aims to minimize the morbidity rate and decontaminate ecosystems., minimizing the risk of flooding in areas surrounding the stream due to the removal of large volumes of sediment, weeds and localized garbage, stabilization and rehabilitation of soils in the channel and areas near the stream, eradication of insects and bad odors, improvement of the urban environment and the valorization of the properties.

Within the project executed by the Majupay Consortium, awareness workshops were provided to the community and educational institutions regarding: emergency care, climate change and how to prevent the risk. In your 70% of execution and going through a strong winter in the Guajiro territory, The inhabitants of this sector of the municipality of Maicao have managed to overcome it without having floods due to these works.

The project has also been an effective source for increasing employability, the knowledge and responsibility of the communities in not contributing to the stream channel becoming saturated again.

The Municipal Unit for Risk Management approves the execution of the work, because it has been of great impact for the municipality, showing in the daily reports of the Early Warning System that Maicao for the first time in many years has not had any victims., where families were traditionally evacuated for hours or days; They also state that fortunately the waters have been flowing quickly, allowing to give a positive report, motivating the community to value this great contribution from the highest environmental authority in the department.
