SUCCESSFUL ADVANCE OF THE GEOMORPHOLOGICAL RESTORATION WORK IN A SECTION OF THE RIVER CAÑAS, DIBULLA JURISDICTION

Mitigating effects of rising and reducing disaster risks, main objectives of the project.

With the Geomorphological Restoration project of a section of the Cañas River, district of Mingueo, Township Dibulla, Corpoguajira seeks to solve the problem presented by the high sediment rate and the wandering of the channel in a wide sector of the Cañas River, reducing the effects of river flooding on the banks of the riverbed, facilitating the transit in its lower sector, preventing erosion on its banks and establishing a more stable channel.

For that, erosion control works are being carried out, excavation, filling and cleaning channel, that will allow to recover the fluvial geomorphology of the Cañas river in the neighboring sector and downstream of the urban area of Mingueo, thereby reducing wandering and undermining and, thus, the ravages caused by the floods.

The development of the project includes three sections of the river, high to medium priority, total 3.08 kilometers. The highest priority section is Mingueo, because the river seriously threatens the western edge of the populated center and it is necessary to intervene the channel as soon as possible. A system of spurs will be built and recovery will be made through dredging.

In second priority is the section downstream of Mingueo, where the channel expands and adopts a braided bed (anastomosado). And finally, in third priority, the meandering section has been considered downstream of the braided section to the mouth.

With the intervention to the channel of the Cañas River, the natural resource and the surrounding populations will be safeguarded. It is estimated that at least a thousand people from the municipality of Dibulla will benefit from the implementation of the project.
