The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira - Corpoguajira, conducts studies for the expansion of the Integrated Management District (DMI) Serranía del Perijá with the support of USAID's Natural Wealth program.
The objective of this expansion is to incorporate 21.088,65 hectares to the protected area in the municipalities of Barrancas, Fonseca, El Molino, Hatonuevo and San Juan del Cesar, that allow to improve the structural and functional connectivity of the Perijá and Montes de Oca Tropical Alternohidric Zonobiomes, Baja Guajira and Alto Cesar, and the Azonal Orobiomes Subandino Perijá and Montes de Oca and Andino Perijá and Montes de Oca, in the north of the Perijá mountain range, in the upper and middle basins of the Seco streams, Caurina and Magalote and the Cerrejón and Palomino rivers.
Similarly, The aim is to achieve the sustainable use of the resources of the dry forest ecosystems and the associated species in the upper and middle basins of the Seco streams., Caurina and Magalote and the Cerrejón and Palomino rivers; Protect the natural elements that are cultural determinants for the Wayuú indigenous peoples and the black community of Patilla.
Also preserve and recover springs and springs located in the upper and middle basins of the Seco streams., Caurina and Magalote and the Cerrejón and Palomino rivers.
It should be noted, that for four consecutive days prior consultation was held with the Wayuú indigenous communities of Nuevo Espinal and Tamaquito II, identified by the Ministry of the Interior for this expansion process, which allowed the protocolization of agreements with each of them.
