ANDES CONDOR WATCHING IN LA GUAJIRA

During the days 13, 14 and 15 February, the First National Census of the Andean Condor was carried out, throughout the national territory along the Andes mountain range and where there is an influential activity of the species, departments like La Guajira, Santander, Norte de Santander, Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Tolima, The Cauca, Valle del Cauca, Nariño, Magdalena in the Sierra Nevada, Cesar and those of the Central Cordillera near the snow-capped mountains.

In the department, the guardians of environment and peace and volunteers were able to spot three specimens of this flagship bird in Colombia, two juveniles and a subadult. The count took place simultaneously both in the Serranía del Perijá, Cerro Pintao and Cerro Bañadero with the active participation of bird experts and environmental guardians and with the decisive support of the Acciona group that joined this initiative that seeks to collect information on the habits and population of the Condor de los Andes..

The Condor of the Andes (vulture Gryphus), Weighs between 9 and 15 kilos and is considered the largest flying bird in the world and in Colombia; experts estimate that around 130 condors live in the Colombian Andes, Nevertheless, is critically endangered in the country and almost threatened on a global scale, due to the low number of individuals existing in its range, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Situation caused mainly by the deterioration and transformation of habitats as a result of human settlements and the expansion of the agricultural frontier towards the Andean forests and paramos, also due to the hunting of the species, mistakenly being considered a threat to livestock.

The species, that only lays one egg every two or three years and is distributed from Venezuela to southern Argentina and Chile, it had never been census, so the current census becomes the starting point to continue estimating in a real way, the population of condors in the country, which will be a tool for the Regional Autonomous Corporations, CAR and organizations responsible for its conservation.
