HOWLER MONKEY HUNTING AND TRADING IS CAUSING ENVIRONMENTAL IMBALANCE IN LA GUAJIRA

The roads between Riohacha and Maicao, the places where these environmental crimes are occurring the most. The corporation calls for the conservation of wild species.

The ecosystem and biodiversity group responsible for wildlife of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira - Corpoguajira- so far this year he has received income from 7 howling monkeys (Alouatta seniculus), which have been snatched from their mothers by people who are dedicated to hunting and commercializing these species, particularly on the roads between Riohacha and Maicao, causing environmental damage to the ecosystem and affecting the inventory of these individuals that are part of the beauty of the landscape on all the riverbanks of this lower area of La Guajira.

Howler monkeys are of great ecological importance because they are excellent seed spreaders. In their daily movements they transport seeds from the forests to the plantations, thus contributing to the natural regeneration and enrichment of these spaces.

The environmental authority calls on the Guajiros not to buy wildlife and report where this illegal activity is taking place. Similarly, invites the community to further increase sensitivity towards endangered species, report ownership, hunting and sale to promote the conservation and protection of natural resources, especially those species that are threatened.

During the last hours two baby howler monkeys were placed at the disposal of the Corporation to be returned to their habitat., which accounts for the awareness that some people have with the conservation and preservation of species.
