Alliance “add your hands” donates dump truck at the end of the candle for waste collection
Through a ceremony in which leaders of the Cabo de la Vela community participated, Presidency of the Republic, Uribia Mayor's Office, Corpoguajira and representatives of the different companies involved in “Suma Tus Manos”, The second phase of this socio-environmental project officially began.
At this stage, the alliance donated under the figure of loan to the Association of Lodgings and Restaurants of Cabo de la Vela “ASOCABO”., a dump truck with a capacity of 10 tons for waste management in the area.
The vehicle will have established collection routes and will take unusable waste to the landfill located in the municipality of Maicao.. Meanwhile, the usable waste (papel, cartón, plastic, glass, aluminum) They will be transferred to a collection center where they will be given the appropriate treatment for subsequent marketing and closing of the cycle..
The donation of the dump truck is part of the second phase of 'Suma tus Manos', a public-private purpose that aims to promote sustainable development in the Wayuú communities of Cabo de la Vela, through their empowerment and capacity building in order to reduce pollution through 4 phases:
1) Design of the solid waste management system.
2) Installing system infrastructure.
3) Training in environmental education for community companies, business, community and schools.
4) Creation, support and strengthening of solid waste management.
The first cycle was carried out in December 2018 with a massive cleanup day in which nearly 2.000 volunteers managed to collect 116 tons of garbage throughout 16 km2 of beach in Cabo de la Vela, an unprecedented event for the region.
A second stage of collection with the implementation of the dump truck made it possible to transfer 3 tons of solid waste to the northern landfill, taking into account that this vehicle has a capacity of 10 tons and that said collection will be made 3 times a week from 07:00 a.m. to achieve the goal.
Over 100 commercial establishments between lodgings, restaurants, fruit shops and tourist places, as well as the Rural Ethnoeducational Institution Indigenous Boarding School of Cabo de la Vela will benefit from this system.
The 'Suma Tus Manos' alliance seeks to support compliance with the SDG 12 (Production and Responsible Consumption) and the SDG 13 (Climate action). Similarly, will contribute to the proposed goals for the reduction of greenhouse gases and increase the recycling rate of solid waste.
