Wayúu communities participated in a conference on conservation of the marine-coastal ecosystem

Aspects related to the Sawairu regional protected area and the implementation of adaptation measures against coastal erosion were addressed.. The Decree was also socialized 281 of 2021, which establishes measures for the protection and conservation of sharks, marine rays and chimeras in Colombia.

Indigenous and traditional communities of Cape de La Vela, Carrizal and Cardon (Uribia), participated in a conference that addressed aspects related to the Sawairu regional protected area and the implementation of adaptation measures based on marine and coastal ecosystems, against coastal erosion.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Corpoguajira, the Mabe-Kfw-Ministry of Environment project, the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority, entre otras entidades.
The works to be carried out contemplate the updating of the diagnosis and zoning of the mangroves in specific sectors of the peninsula, which are considered a fundamental defense against this problem.

As explained by Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira, The project will last for eight months., “These inter-institutional actions will allow us to develop sustainable management agreements for the conservation of the mangrove ecosystem in La Guajira, that allow updating the environmental determinants that will serve as planning instruments for the adaptation of climate change”.

The official also specified that mangroves are recognized for their protective function against coastal erosion by stabilizing the land.; additionally contribute
with carbon capture, they are rich in biodiversity and act as a filter against pollution, “A fundamental aspect of this ecosystem is its role as a barrier
against natural phenomena such as tropical cyclones that form every year between the months of June and November”.

Corpoguajira indicated that during this space the Decree 281 of 2021, which establishes measures for the protection and conservation of sharks, marine rays and chimeras in Colombia. It should be noted that the Sawairu Integrated Management Regional District, It is the largest seagrass area declared in conservation in the country.. It is located between the municipalities of Manaure and Uribia, with an extension that exceeds 66 thousand hectares.
