With the purpose of coordinating the necessary procedures that allow the implementation of the Management Plan of the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve, met today at the Garrapateros property (Maicao), the Social Technical Work Committee, which will develop strategic actions aimed at fulfilling each of the goals of the programs structured for this protected area of ​​La Guajira..

The Social Technical Work Committee, It is made up of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira (entity in charge of the Technical Secretariat), the Government of La Guajira, National Army, Ecotourism Node of La Guajira and the Mayors of Maicao and Albania. Additionally, representatives of companies from the private productive sector take part. (Carbones del Cerrejón Limited and Aguas de la Peninsula), Non-Governmental Organizations (Conservation International, Biocolombia, Cerrejón Foundation) and members of the Carraipía communities, The Remedies and Garrapateros.

During the day, the parameters to be followed for the implementation of the Montes de Oca Management Plan were established., in each of its components: preservation zone, conservation, ecological restoration for special and public use.

The activity also included, by Corpoguajira, the socialization of the community project of environmental recreation and ecotourism development designed for the Forest Reserve, in order to ensure the conservation of its conservation objectives and sustainable development.

Ecological tourism work in Montes de Oca, contemplate natural settings considered attractive in the Reserve. They will be executed in a harmonious and eco-efficient manner with the environment and will facilitate the development of educational and recreational activities., raising awareness about the strategic importance that the area represents for the region. For the development of the ecotourism project, some of the considerations raised in the management plan have been taken, and include signage, eco-cabin location, interpretation trails, a viewing shelter, the construction of an environmental research and recreation station and control and surveillance posts.

Ecotourism in this Protected Area, It will be a new opportunity that will improve the quality of life and well-being of the community, the generation of strategic environmental benefits as a natural basis for social and economic development and the in situ conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic resources.

The Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve, It has an extension of 8.494 hectares, It is located at the northern end of the Eastern mountain range and is an integral part of the Serranía de Perijá, on the borders of Colombia and Venezuela. This area of ​​tropical dry forest, It has an extensive network of drainage and water sources; The Carraipía River and the Porciosa streams originate there., Majayura, La Chingolita, Bruno, Jotomahana, Tobacco, inter alia, of which the municipalities of Albania and Maicao are supplied with water for consumption and agricultural production.
