Forest loss is a problem that is increasing, triggering major floods as witnessed during the winter season 2011 and high water deficit, like the recent phenomenon of the child 2014-2016.

In colombia, in the last 20 years a large number of hectares of forests have been lost; in 1990 The forest cover of the country was 64, 442,269 hectares and for 2010 the area of ​​total forest cover had dropped to 59.021.810 hectares. In this way, in the last 20 years were lost 5.4 million hectares of forest, one of the most affected areas being the Caribbean region and the Amazon.

In the department of La Guajira, The problem of forest loss and ecosystem degradation is also present.. This region is characterized by having a semi-arid climate., tropical dry forest and low rainfall.

Due to these conditions, Corpoguajira presented the project called “Rehabilitation of forest ecosystems in the Ranchería river basins, Tapias and Cesar in the municipalities of Riohacha, San Juan del Cesar, Manaure and Albania-la guajira”; This is due to the high demand that the basins and micro-basins have, which in the long term puts the water supply at risk., of approximately 75% of the Guajira population.

A project that during 12 months will have intervention in the 3 basins, increasing the vegetation cover of the forests in their water circuit and strengthening the commitment of the surrounding communities in terms of caring for the environment. Will be set to active restore processes (sowing 919 hectares) and in passive restoration (1581 hectares approximately), represented in 349 kilometers of barbed wire fences, implementing immunized posts from commercial forest plantations with their corresponding ICA registration.

Twenty-five will also be established (25) restoration evaluation and monitoring plots in order to measure the dynamics of the vegetation component. So too, Workshops will be held with the communities involved in topics such as: environmental impacts, cleaner production, sowing, organic fertilizers, proper reforestation techniques and others.

Corpoguajira will carry out the necessary works, in order to contribute to the rehabilitation of forest ecosystems in the 3 basins, with which it seeks to guarantee the water supply in the medium and long term, protect and conserve natural resources and raise awareness among communities in the area of ​​influence to promote the protection of water circuits, forests and associated fauna.
