The Board of Directors of Corpoguajira approved the management plan of the Serranía del Perijá Soil Conservation District, which will allow maintaining the coverage of dry and sub-Andean forest ecosystems, preserve altitude connectivity and strengthen governance of the protected area, which includes an extension of 21.042,68 hectares, distributed among the municipalities of El Molino, Villanueva, Urumita and La Jagua del Pilar.
Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira, pointed out that such management will also serve to recover, rehabilitate and reforest the interior of the area betting on mitigation
climate change in the region, “This approval allows us to contribute to the conservation of tropical dry forest ecosystems, of the Andean forest and the fauna and flora present there; tending for its natural recovery and connectivity”.
In addition, He specified that “degraded ecosystems will be rehabilitated, disturbed or affected areas of the protected area to contribute to its ecological integrity and the provision of
Ecosystem services".
The environmental authority explained that these conservation figures are a geographical space whose strategic ecosystems on a regional scale maintain their function, although its structure and composition have been modified. In addition to the above, they essentially contribute to the generation of environmental goods and services, whose associated natural and cultural values are made available to the human population for their restoration, Sustainable use, preservation, understanding and enjoyment.
The Serranía de Perijá Soil Conservation District seeks to promote sustainable development and conservation of natural resources of local communities, as well as being an ecological corridor for emblematic species such as the jaguar, the marimonda, la cotorra cariamarilla, Curassow crest of stone, among other species.
