Corpoguajira expanded the DRMI Perijá protected area by more than 18.000 hectares

The declaration will strengthen the connectivity of the tropical dry forest and sub-Andean forest, in the upper and middle basins of the Seco streams, Caurina and Magalote and the Cerrejón and Palomino rivers. The process was carried out through joint work between Corpoguajira, USAID's Natural Wealth Program and local communities.

The Board of Directors of Corpoguajira approved the expansion of the protected area Regional District of Integrated Management Perijá, in 18.276 hectares, which will allow strengthening the connectivity of the tropical dry forest and sub-Andean forest, in the upper and middle basins of the Seco streams, Caurina and Magalote and the Cerrejón and Palomino rivers.

Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira, explained that “the extension contributes to the sustainable use of the resources of the dry forest ecosystems; protect the natural elements that are cultural determinants for the ethnic communities and preserve and recover the springs and springs located in this area”.

In addition, highlighted the work articulated with the USAID Natural Wealth Program and with local communities throughout the process carried out to be able to make the declaration official and specified that "we are already working on the diagnostic components, and ordering that will be part of the management plan for the area”.

The environmental entity reported that with this expansion, the protected area consolidates a total of 42.158 hectares, distributed among the municipalities of El Molino, San Juan del Cesar, Fonseca, Barrancas and Hatonuevo.

In addition to the above, he reported that this management will strengthen the conservation of fauna species such as the jaguar, the marimonda and the green macaw; also specimens of flora with a high degree of threat such as the fine heart, ebony, puy, guayacán, inter.

The approval was made in the session of the Board of Directors of Corpoguajira, held in the Nuevo Espinal indigenous reservation (Barrancas), which had the participation of representatives of said community.

Alvaro Ipuana, Cabildo Governor of the reservation expressed that "the population feels excited because this guarantees us the security of the territories. We need these areas to be conserved because this is the livelihood of us peasants and indigenous people”.

Finally, Corpoguajira pointed out that within the framework of this process, the different stages of prior consultation with the Nuevo Espinal and Tamaquito II Indigenous Reservations were fully developed..
