Tree planting days and environmental education activities will be held

Within the framework of the “International Year of Forests 2011”, declared by the UN, Corpoguajira will celebrate the 12 October World Tree Day, with reforestation days and environmental education activities in different areas of the department.

In this commemoration, The highest environmental authority will provide technical support at the community tree plantation day that will take place in the San Francisco neighborhood, from the city Riohacha, whose inhabitants were given 60 fruit trees.

For its part, the territorial headquarters of the south of La Guajira, Within the framework of this celebration, several cleaning days have been carried out in Fonseca, Barrancas, Distraction and San Juan del Cesar. Several conferences on environmental issues will be held tomorrow, in which the Community Action Boards will participate, this area of ​​the department, to those who will deliver trees that will be planted under the supervision of Corpoguajira. Likewise, The entity will support with plant material the reforestation campaigns to be developed by the Social Pastoral of the municipality of Barrancas, in the Los Olivos and El Pilar neighborhoods; and in San Juan del Cesar, with the Lions Club.

Since September 2008, Corpoguajira has carried out significant actions that are part of the Biodiverse Forests program, Among them are the iimplementation of forest closures for threatened or critically endangered species, with the purpose of mitigate phenomena such as desertification. Regarding the actions of the dry zone management plan, they have gone ahead zoning work, recovery and protection of soils and plant covers in the municipalities of Riohacha, Manaure y Maicao. In this period the seizure of illegal wood has been 596 cubic meters. Meanwhile, in degraded areas of the Ranchería rivers, Cease, Tapias, Tomarrazón, Reeds, San Salvador, Cotoprix, Width, Palomino, Carraipía, Sherry and Black, reforestation work has been carried out, complementing to date more than 2.500 has.

The celebration of Arbor Day, It also includes the realization of a “Ecological Night” addressed to personnel assigned to Carbones Colombianos del Cerrejón, whose central theme will be global darkening due to particulate matter and carbon capture projects as a mitigation alternative.
