Corpoguajira, Cerrejón and community associations, signed conservation agreements to protect the tropical dry forest

Corpoguajira and Cerrejón signed five conservation agreements with six community associations for the protection, conservation and governance the following protected areas: the Protective Forest Reserve of Cañaverales
and Montes de Oca; and the Integrated Management Districts of the Ranchería River delta, the lower basin of the Ranchería river and Bañaderos the upper basin of the Camarones river.

The strategy corresponds to one of the environmental compensation actions that the company will carry out to protect 455 hectares of tropical dry forest. Through the establishment of voluntary agreements with the actors of the territory, the preservation is sought, the use and integrated management of natural resources, and the protection of forest species ban, like the fine heart, the ball guayacán, the puy and the monkey pot.

“This measure will allow us to have a greater presence and governance in our protected areas and to control situations such as forest fires., illegal minery, indiscriminate hunting of wildlife, deforestation, the conservation of the natural dry forest and river basins. All these actions will be worked on in a coordinated way with our Guardians of Environment and Peace ", explained Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira.

“The implementation of this type of agreement will allow us to empower the people present in the territory to be leading actors in the conservation of the forest., who participate in biodiversity surveillance and monitoring activities and adopt sustainable production practices. Thus, we work to strengthen the sustainability of ecosystems in the long term ", said Luis Madriñán, manager
Cerrejón Environmental Management.

Meanwhile, Armando Acevedo, representative of the agroindustrial cooperative of farmers relocated in Garrapetero, indicated that “the signing of the agreement will strengthen the organizations present in each of the protected areas, as well as the conservation of the species of fauna and flora in each one of the delimited sectors ".

Within the framework of these agreements, which will have the supervision of Corpoguajira, training workshops will be held on environmental conservation issues, follow-up actions on the effectiveness of conservation and the strengthening of associations for its governance of the territory. With the implementation of this type of actions, it contributes to the improvement of the biodiversity of the region, allowing the protection of species
of flora in closure and fauna in a state of threat.
