Corpoguajira committed to protecting forest reserve Montes de Oca

Montes de Oca protective forest reserve that is now focus on all guajiros.

It is the only source of water in the municipality of Maicao and is affected by the implementation of bad environmental practices of some settlers in the conservation area., those early in the rainy season make decisions that threaten biodiversity and the subsistence of the ecosystem, by means of cooking and burning without measuring the consequences that this generates.

Corpoguajira through its professionals generated a population characterization in properties by the reserve and buffer zone, it is believed that approximately 50 families settled in the area in times of migration crisis.

The last Sunday 25 August, Corpoguajira advanced with the Guardians of Environment and Peace, the fourth and last consultation meeting with the community settled in the path of El Jordán; with the purpose of applying conservation strategies to preserve the Montes de Oca Forest Reserve.

The paths of La Troco, Jordan and Caño Seco located in the Carraipía district (part of forest reserve) were identified by the community as crisis points due to the intervention of the inhabitants with logging actions, environmental pollution, cattle ranching and burning by socola as an agricultural practice among others.

Once the characterization is achieved, projects will be formulated that allow the purchase of these lands and generate actions that facilitate the sustainable and sustainable use of the area and its natural resources..

Since the previous validity in the La Gitana farm owned by Corpoguajira and in alliance with the Alto Magdalena Foundation and the Guardians of Environment and Peace, the construction of a nursery in which they will be produced 10 thousand seedlings of native species and especially of dry forests. The Alto Magdalena Foundation manages the social part of HOCOL and in alliance workshops will be developed for the community of permaculture or ecological design applied to sustainable architecture and others..

The compensation demanded of the Promigas company in the Montes de Oca forest reserve, allows the sustainability of the reforestation that was carried out in the 2018 and that Corpoguajira will supervise until 2020, guaranteeing assistance for their growth to the sown seedlings. At 2002 Corpoguajira trained 44 Environmental watchdogs who are kept on alert in each of the points that make up Montes de Oca.
