The recommendations were made at the request of the District of Riohacha in order to advance the cleaning and oxygenation work of the beaches of the Guajira capital.
Riohacha, 9 September 2020
Taking into account the current environmental regulations in the country, Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, CORPOGUAJIRA, issued a concept for carrying out cleaning works on the beaches of Riohacha and the delta of the Ranchería river.
From the specific conditions of the coastal area of this part of the department, cleaning must be done manually and with minor tools such as shovels and scythes. The removal of cadillo and other species considered invasive, It must be done in the same way, avoiding not affecting the beach that are around it. In addition, the natural regeneration of the mangrove must not be intervened and heavy machinery cannot be used as it can alter the dynamics of dune formation and macrofauna activity.
In some areas that present a compact sand appearance, The use of a mechanical sweeper is considered environmentally viable as long as the vegetation is not affected and once the baseline of current conditions is in place, which the Mayor's Office must present to the environmental authority.
It should be noted that in the Riohacha Land Use Plan, Beaches are considered a conservation area and plans must be implemented to ensure their sustainability. On the other hand, the Delta of the Ranchería river presents biological characteristics conducive to the growth of mangroves, key ecosystem for the development of wildlife typical of coastal areas as they are land that serves for food, nesting and shelter for different species.
Corpoguajira has additionally recommended, that the District of Riohacha carry out a study that allows knowing the true environmental status of each urban or rural beach in its jurisdiction, which will allow you to carry out the tourist zoning and formulate the corresponding intervention plans such as cleaning or other work.
