With the purpose of minimizing the deterioration of the coastal marine ecosystems of the department and avoiding the extinction of species of fauna and flora that inhabit the area. (between the Tapias and Cañas rivers), the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira and the George Dahl Hydrobiological Foundation, Baseline studies are being carried out to allow the declaration of coastal wetlands in the municipality of Dibulla as a protected area..

As part of the management of this process, The scope and execution of this project was presented and socialized to the local authorities and educational institutions in the area of influence., in order to explain the advantages of declaring a protected area; allowing the participation of different actors in the methodological route of said process.

They are currently in this area, the needle alligator, the morrocoy, the hicotea, 4 sea turtle species and the indigo falcon snake; considered in a state of threat and that are important for conservation due to their relationship with the tropical dry forest, mangrove ecosystems and the adjoining coastal marine strip.

Likewise, The coastal wetlands of Dibulla are considered of vital importance for maintaining the environmental quality of La Guajira., and for the maintenance of great biodiversity, due to the presence of mangrove forests in good condition and mature fragments of dry-tropical forest that are home to a large number of birds, among which the mangrove hummingbird stands out. ( considered in critical condition), pink flamingo and many migratory species from the northern hemisphere that use them as a breeding and fattening station during the northern winter.

It is worth mentioning that in the dry forest fragments that are still found in the area, plant species considered critically endangered or with some degree of threat stand out, such as: ebony, ball guayacan, gusanero, corozo and Palma llanera.

For the highest environmental authority , It is important to increase the declaration of protected areas in La Guajira, as a conservation strategy that guarantees the population the environmental goods and services provided by biodiversity, especially bodies of water. Currently Corpoguajira has declared protected areas, seven of them due to their conditions and importance in the region.
