Corpoguajira strengthens actions for the conservation of Goose Mountains

The environmental entity obtained the approval of three projects that will allow the ecological rehabilitation of the protected area, by sowing more than 500.000 trees

Three important projects managed by Corpoguajira, before the General Royalties System and the Environmental Compensation Fund, will strengthen the work carried out by this entity for the conservation of the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve.

This was announced by Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira, during the day of hiking and ecological awareness, held this weekend in the protected area, in which representatives of the Maicao mayor's office participated, the private sector among other institutions. He explained that “one of the projects ended with excellent results, achieving the rehabilitation of forest ecosystems, through restoration (active and passive) of 500 hectares and planting 180.000 trees".

Additionally, it is an opportunity to ratify at the national level our commitment to environmental education processes aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources”, He indicated that the works for ecological rehabilitation in degraded areas in the middle basin of the Carraipía River and the recovery of forest ecosystems are in the process of being contracted., “These actions will allow the intervention of approximately 800 hectares and the establishment of 380.000 new trees for this area that supplies water to the inhabitants of the municipality of Maicao”.

During the event, the official highlighted the articulated work that is also carried out in Montes de Oca, together with the Guardians of Environment and Peace and private sector companies; among them the linking of twelve families to the Payments for Environmental Services scheme, the macaw conservation program, honey production with melipona bees and the training of local communities in avitourism.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Maicao, Mohamad Dasuki Hajj, who stated that "it is important that all our inhabitants and indigenous communities, let us unite around the conservation of this natural area. We must not allow deforestation since every tree in this place gives us oxygen and water”.

It should be noted that Montes de Oca is a Protective Forest Reserve, encompassing 12.294 hectares located between the municipalities of Maicao and Albania. In this place the ecosystems of dry forest and subxerophytic scrub are protected, to ensure the water supply of the hydrographic micro-basins, mainly those corresponding to tributaries of the Carraipía river basin, on which the water supply for these municipalities depends. Additionally, threatened flora species such as ebony and mahogany are preserved., and species of wild fauna among which the marimonda stands out, the tunato guajiro, The jaguar, the stone crest, inter.
