Corpoguajira strengthens actions for the conservation of the needle caiman and sea turtle

Through the installation of transmitter equipment and biometric studies, the conservation status of these species will be analyzed..

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira managed with the Environmental Compensation Fund (FCA), the project that will assess the conservation status of the needle caiman and sea turtles in the coastal area between the Palomino rivers (Dibulla), Rancheria (Riohacha) and in Bahía Hondita (Uribia).

Works include, among other activities, the implantation of transmitters in alligators to study their follow-up, evaluation and analysis. Additionally, the nesting ecology of sea turtles will be studied., the delimitation of the confluence area of the species will be designed and workshops will be held with representatives of the community, productive and tourism sector to sensitize them on the importance of not participating in practices related to tenure, trade and consumption of wildlife.

The implementation of these actions contribute, sin lugar a dudas, to strengthen conservation work led by the Corporation, aimed at guaranteeing the survival of the four species of sea turtles present in La Guajira; In the same way, it will allow us to generate knowledge about the populations of the needle caiman..

It should be noted that the populations of sea turtles that frequent the department suffer strong pressures due to the extraction and consumption of their meat and the alteration of their feeding and nesting habitats., which are affected by the degradation of water quality due to excess nutrients and sediments, destructive fishing practices, boat propellers, coastal infrastructure works, hurricanes, invasion of alien species, Inter alia.

The project will last for 10 months and also includes different environmental pedagogical conferences with educational institutions in Palomino, Mingueo, Dibulla, The Punta de Los Remedios, Shrimps, Riohacha and Bahía Hondita.
