Corpoguajira stronger action to protect wetlands within its jurisdiction

Corpoguajira implemented significant actions aimed at recovering water wetlands seven rounds of the peninsula. The work shall clearly define the actual area of ​​such water bodies, helping to mitigate the loss of the same and the socio-environmental conflicts between different sectors of the population.

The area of ​​influence corresponds to wetlands Las Mercedes, 15 of May, Bocagrande and Laguna Salá (Riohacha); Laguna Bello Horizonte (Dibulla); El Manantial (El Molino) and Lake Washington (Maicao).

Wetlands in the department of La Guajira, They present an environmental problem caused by factors such as water pollution, Deforestation of water rounds, erosion, fragmentation water system, inter alia, which affect the socioeconomic development of the region and the quality of life of its inhabitants.

This situation is evident in the municipalities of Riohacha, Dibulla, Maicao and the Mill, whose wetlands have been affected by illegal appropriation of buffer strips, by individuals, causing the loss of environmental goods and services especially represented by faunal and fisheries.

Wetlands are essential for the countless benefits they provide to humanity, such as flood control and prevention, retain sediment and nutrients, contribute discharge and recharge, function as water reservoirs and contribute to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
