Twelve families living in the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve benefited from the Banco2 program

 

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, CORPOGUAJIRA, In coordination with the company HOCOL, twelve families residing in the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve in the municipality of Maicao were linked to the BANCO2 payment for environmental services program..

The BANCO2 program consists of the periodic delivery of an economic incentive to selected families, who, as compensation, are obliged to protect and conserve a certain number of hectares of tropical dry forest within the property where they live. Financial support will be delivered through allowances for one year, with possibilities of extending the agreement. Son 130 the number of hectares that the twelve beneficiary families of the BANCO2 program committed to protect and conserve in the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve. The selected ecosystems are located in the Colombia Libre villages, The Paraujanos and La Chingolita, all in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Maicao. In addition to the protection and care of the forest, The peasant families committed to reforest one hectare of their property, which indicates that at the end of the agreement there will be twelve hectares reforested. The plant material required for reforestation will be supplied by CORPOGUAJIRA.

The benefited families, Most of them have been trained as Guardians of the Environment and Peace by CORPOGUAJIRA for the protection and support in the conservation of the protected area..
