In use of its powers, the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira - Corpoguajira- imposed preventive measure of suspension of activity to the Municipality of Fonseca, aimed at prohibiting the continued disposal of waste from the municipality of Maicao in the Regional Landfill of the South of La Guajira.

During a follow-up and control visit carried out by professionals of the corporation, it was determined that the municipality of Fonseca, through the operator of the sanitary landfill, is violating the environmental license, accelerated and anticipated reducing the useful life of the landfill by disposing of a quantity of waste almost three times greater than that estimated in its design, favoring a condition of environmental risk due to over-level and loading of the fill, which can cause rupture of the geomembrane and infiltration of leachates.

Likewise, it was established that it is placing itself at risk of regionalization of the final disposal system defined by Corpoguajira in the northern region (Maicao, Manaure y Uribia) and south (from Hatonuevo to La Jagua del Pilar) by allowing the disposal in the southern regional landfill approximately 14.400 tons per year or more, from the border municipality with the consequent accelerated decrease in their useful life.

The preventive measure that is imposed, Its purpose is to prevent or avoid the continuation of an activity and situation that is threatening the environment, natural resources, the natural landscape and human health.

Corpoguajira calls on the municipality of Fonseca to move forward immediately and prior to the rainy season, substantive corrective actions on leachate management. Also that it restricts the disposal of waste from Maicao taking into account that the landfill does not have the capacity to receive said waste..
