CORPOGUAJIRA REGRETS Bycatch SHARK WHALE IN CABO DE LA VELA

During the morning of today through social networks we received images sent by a German citizen who denounced the fishing of a whale shark in the vicinity of the beaches of Cabo de la Vela, in the municipality of Uribia, and that later fishermen in the area took the deceased species for consumption.

Corpoguajira immediately becomes aware of the situation and informs the National Police substation closest to the area, who reported that it was an individual of the Rhincodon typus species., (whale shark) approximately 5 meters long.

It was possible to determine that the fact is incidental fishing since the animal was entangled in a trammel net used for the traditional fishing gear of the Guajira communities in their daily tasks., what caused his death.

This highly migratory species, It is found in coastal and oceanic areas and does not represent a danger to bathers since it feeds on plankton and phytoplankton.. The size at maturity is estimated between 8 and 9 m, which indicates that the individual found was still juvenile.

Corpoguajira in its responsibility and since its management declared the ninth protected area in the department, the Integrated Management District – Sawairu in order to ensure the conservation of seagrasses and aquatic species. The environmental authority thanks the citizen who made this fact known and calls on the Guajiros and visitors to continue implementing actions that help the conservation of our species.
