Corpoguajira liberará 35 caimanes aguja en Dibulla

After spending a year under controlled conditions, 35 needle alligators (Crocodylus acutus) They have contact with their natural environment, when they released into the wetland Caño Lagartos (Dibulla).

The introduction of reptiles, that will take place on 21 November 2015, is part of the Cayman Needle Conservation Plan, that advances the highest environmental authority of La Guajira with the aim of contributing to the preservation of this species.

Los 35 alligators remained in the Corpoguajira Wildlife and Environmental Agroecological Center, where they received the necessary care to arrive safely in their environment. During the days prior to release, a health assessment will be carried out and they will undergo acclimatization and identification processes.. The community is also an active part of this project, since they have been trained on the importance of the conservation plan and the support they can provide to this species.

This project has been possible thanks to the inter-institutional alliance between Corpoguajira, the George Dahl Hydrobiological Foundation and Gecelca.

The needle alligator is an endangered species due to hunting for its skin, the destruction of their habitat and the deterioration of mangroves.
