In order to determine the extent of contamination or contribution of particulate matter by the coal operators operating in the region, during 2014, Corpoguajira practiced 2.305 Samples of air quality monitoring, distributed in the 19 stations that make up the system for monitoring the environmental authority.
Through this study Corpoguajira established that during the previous year were presented 13 exceedances standard daily, given in Resolution 610 of 2010; however the consolidated results for the same period, did not exceed what was contemplated in the country's environmental laws, due, mainly, the rainfall in recent months 2014.
However, for the Corporation, it is important that measures or strategies more forceful control is taken by mining companies, to have an efficient control over this situation, especially in the dry season looming.
Corpoguajira made some specific recommendations, including, stop disposing the waste material in landfills that have direct influence on Las Casitas, Provincial and Barrancas, as some are within 5 Km away from these locations. The environmental authority, also considers important to intensify the risks both paths to pits and dumps assets, which are very close to population centers. Another requirement is the backfilling of pits that are no longer in operation and make efforts to reduce the number of fires in coal seams, considering that contribute to global warming and react with water vapor causing acid rain.
During 2015, Corpoguajira intensify the monitoring of air quality in the mining corridor department, to ensure the conservation of the environment and the health of the inhabitants of the peninsula.
