The Director General of Corpoguajira, Luis Manuel Medina Toro, participated on behalf of the Caribbean Protected Areas System, in the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP), activity that took place in Bogotá D.C, at the facilities of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
During the event, it was proposed to carry out a complete update of the Single National Registry of Protected Areas (HUMAN BEINGS), in order to advance a strategy that allows controlling the granting of mining titles and environmental licenses in areas of importance and interest for the conservation of biodiversity.
As part of the agenda developed, CONAP also approved its internal regulations and defined commitments for its members, in efforts to increase the number of Protected Areas in the country and advance in meeting the goal of two million hectares of new areas declared in ecosystems that have little representation, like the coastal sailor, dry forests, inter alia.
Another of the agreed agreements was the design and implementation of management strategies and financial sustainability of the Protected Areas..
In accordance with the Decree 2372 of 2010, in order to guarantee harmonious operation, comprehensive and coordinated of the National System of Protected Areas, CONAP was formed, which is made up of the Minister of the Environment, as President; the Director of the Special Administrative Unit of the National Natural Parks System, in his capacity as Coordinator; the Director of Ecosystems and a representative designated by each of the regional subsystems of protected areas.
Some of the functions supported by the Director of Corpoguajira as part of CONAP are:
Recommend the adoption of strategies that allow harmonizing the management of protected areas in the different management areas, as well as the other components of the National System of Protected Areas; socialize and discuss policies internally, rules and procedures, related to SINAP; recommend guidelines for coordination with environmental authorities, territorial entities, authorities and representatives of ethnic groups, non-governmental organizations, community and individuals, strategies for the formation, development, operation and consolidation of this System and evaluate the progress in its consolidation and make any recommendations that may arise..
