The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, advances the project that will define the commercial appraisal process of the properties that are part of the area of strategic importance for the conservation of the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve and the Cerro Pintao Biogeographic Unit,
A total of 3.400 hectares will be acquired for property sanitation, guaranteeing in the long term the water supply for the different agricultural and domestic uses of the protected areas; in addition, the strategy also contributes to the preservation of the species present in these ecosystems.
These areas face a permanent process of wood extraction and burning to expand pastures and crop areas.; situation that gradually affects the water regulation function fulfilled by the original forest cover, seriously jeopardizing the supply of environmental goods and services.
The Forest Reserve Montes de Oca, comprises the northern end of the Serrania de Perija, on the international border with the Republic of Venezuela, in the jurisdiction of the municipalities of Maicao and Albania; has approximately 200 plant species, 165 Bird, 63 mammalian and 45 herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians). For its part, the Cerro Pintao Biogeographic Unit, has biophysical components, faunal, floristic, cultural and socio-economic of the area; the presence of ecosystems such as humid and very humid premontane forest stands out; humid and very humid lower montane forest and sub-Andean pluvial páramo.
This management will be presented today and tomorrow to the inhabitants of the south of the department, during the tour of the General Director of Corpoguajira, Luis Manuel Medina Toro, to socialize the progress of various projects implemented by the environmental authority to contribute to the conservation of the biodiversity of the peninsula.
