The reptiles, that are in the vulnerable category of threat, They were incubated in the Fauna Center of the coal complex where they were born and were later transferred to be released.

For the Corporation, these types of activities are actions of hope for the conservation of this species and the wild fauna in general..

“For Corpoguajira, protection and conservation is a priority. Therefore, Today's event is especially enjoyable where, in the company of Cerrejón, we have released a thousand hicoteas or freshwater turtle, a vulnerable species that is in danger of extinction ", indicated the Director General of the environmental authority, Samuel Lanao Robles, who also specified that the work in favor of wildlife continues "during the past year and the current one we have confiscated 4.900 wildlife individuals, among them reptiles, mammals, birds, turtles and fish, several of them rehabilitated in our Care Center located in the municipality of Dibulla. We call on the community in general to help us in this noble task of conserving our species ".

Meanwhile, Luis Madriñán, Cerrejón's Environmental Management Manager, stated “since 2007 We have been working on the protection of threatened species as part of our commitment to conserve and safeguard the biodiversity of the region. During the last three years we have released more than 2.800 hicoteas turtles, with which we seek to increase its population and ensure the survival of this species through care from nesting to its incorporation into its natural habitats ".

The hicoteas are a species of turtles that only inhabit Colombia and Venezuela and are threatened mainly by the degradation of their habitats, its commercialization and consumption, in addition to the alteration of swamps and other bodies of water where they commonly inhabit. This species of turtles plays a fundamental role in ecosystems in the control of insects and some plants in addition to the cleaning or recirculation of nutrients.

Since the beginning of the Biodiversity Conservation programs, Cerrejón has provided veterinary care and released more than 10.700 animals, in addition to contributing to the reproduction of other species such as the needle caiman and four species of sea turtles.
