Caring for the Riohacha wetlands, is to avoid flooding in the rainy season

Corpoguajira makes a call to the inhabitants of Riohacha, to conserve and protect the city's wetlands, which are responsible for absorbing and retaining water, in rainy season.

The anthropogenic pressures to which the Bocagrande and La Esperanza bodies of water are subjected (Riohacha), the transformation of your rounds, the lack of ownership of the inhabitants in their surroundings and their little participation in recovery actions; is negatively affecting the free flow of runoff waters, consequently causing flooding in some areas of the city, losing its carrying capacity and consequently reducing its area for controlling water flow., since the sedimentation of the water system continues to increase, eventually causing them to fill up and disappear as such, reflecting in the loss of environmental goods and services such as flood buffering capacity.

Different studies, carried out by Corpoguajira and the municipality of Riohacha, point out the existing conflicts between the current uses of urban land with respect to potential and desirable uses. Territorial planning acquires, in that sense, a strategic dimension to reorient the existence of incompatible activities and uses in all areas of the city and the urban perimeter.

“It is important that the inhabitants surrounding these bodies of water, be the guardians of the wetland, Therefore we call on you to take actions that allow its preservation.. The disappearance of these jagüeyes leads to the loss of environmental goods and services, especially the flood buffering capacity, which could generate the displacement of waters to other parts of the city.", Romero Perez explains Arcesio, General Manager Corpoguajira.

As part of the efforts carried out by the Corporation, the Board of Directors of the entity, approved and adopted the Management Plan for the Riíto Wetland Complex – Laguna Salá and Jagüeyes La Esperanza and Bocagrande, in order to achieve better administration and management of the wetland complex, made the following classification which will be incorporated into the Territorial Planning Plan of the municipality of Riohacha: environmental preservation and protection zone, environmental recovery zone, sustainable production area under specific environmental conditions and areas of environmental reconversion.

Due to its absorption capacity, Wetlands act like a large sponge that retains excess water during rainy periods, reserving it for the dry seasons, Therefore, it regulates the harmful effects of river flooding and the consequent flood risks..
