Ten sea turtles confiscated in La Guajira

The turtles were seized by the National Police and handed over to Corpoguajira, entity that was immediately in charge of carrying out its valuation and reinstatement to its natural habitat. The traffickers were detained by the authorities.

In an operation conducted by the National Police, in four ways (Riohacha – Maicao), Ten sea turtles were seized, which would be slaughtered to market their meat. The animals were in the possession of Sonia Margarita Barreto Ruiz and Antonio José Escobar Castro; who were available to the authorities.

The turtles were delivered to Corpoguajira, entity that immediately took charge of carrying out its assessment. In total seven greens were seized(Chelonia midas) and three tortoiseshell (Eretmochelis overlapped).

The individuals were returned to their natural habitat, en las playas de Riohacha.

The meat of this species is marketed mainly in the municipalities of Uribia., Manaure, Maicao y Riohacha. Turtles are endangered animals and are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. (CITES), treaty governed by the norms of international law.

Corpoguajira invites all inhabitants of the peninsula to denounce any event be hazardous to the environment, conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, through numbers 310 6581142, 318 5858383 and 301 6008358.
