At Corpoguajira we work to consolidate an effective response to natural disasters

With the current winter, the occurrence of gales cannot be ruled out, thunderstorms, landslides and sudden floods in the rivers that come down from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá, For this reason, Corpoguajira carries out actions that contribute to risk mitigation..

The entity in agreement with the Guajira Sectional Red Cross, The Early Warning System is operating (SAT), with which extreme weather phenomena such as tropical storms are permanently monitored, hurricanes and heavy rains that generate floods and that can affect the territory; Based on this information, the daily report on the state of the weather is made and the issuance of alert bulletins and prevention notices to the Committees. –Departmental and Local- Disaster Prevention and Attention (CREPAD y CLOPAD).

As part of these activities, work is also being carried out to install a radio telemetry system that will allow real-time monitoring of the sudden floods of the rivers that come down from the northeastern flank of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta., for timely prevention to communities located on the banks of the basins that descend from the mountain chain.

Corpoguajira and the Red Cross have timely supported the 15 Municipalities of the department of La Guajira with technical information on the identification of areas at risk and susceptible to flooding, achieving the strengthening of CLOPAD, with technical training to the coordinators of these committees and providing the necessary advice for the preparation of their respective Emergency and Contingency Plans. (PLECs).

Arcesio Romero Pérez, General Manager Corpoguajira, He explained that additionally “the entity has been working on risk management projects, advanced flood control and mitigation and recovery works for environmental damage in the period of 2007 a 2010, por valor de $13.572 millones, and that in the present period works are carried out that amount to $ 33.879 millones, with resources from the Corporation and the National Calamity Fund, which benefit more than 90.000 personas”.

Corpoguajira's commitment to this issue, has been evidenced in the active participation of the entity in all flood emergencies that have occurred in La Guajira, through support to CREPAD and through relief agencies, with advice and technical information and provision of equipment such as boats, vehicles, motor pumps and power plants.
