Livio school students receive prize Reginaldo Fischione Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for innovation to sustainability
According to UNESCO, agriculture is the largest consumer of fresh water and represents the 70% of freshwater withdrawals from rivers, lakes and aquifers. In some developing countries this percentage reaches up to 90%.
For the above and thanks to the ingenuity of teachers and students of this Guajira institution, the proposal for the "Sea Greenhouse" arises, a project that seeks sustainability in the department with the purpose of using seawater, solar energy and wind potential, for food production, electricity and drinking water for its residents.
With the solution of 3 basic needs, becomes a sustainable technology with minimal environmental impact, managing to cool and moisten the interior of the Greenhouse with a controlled climate that allows the development of crops.
The production of water is a fundamental part of the project and has a technological proposal that allows condensing the humidified air inside the greenhouse to be stored and used for the needs of the Greenhouse and the institution.
In short, a large-scale project that, based on innovation, managed to be recognized at the World Energy Summit of the Future in Abu Dhabi, where the educational institution was awarded the Zayed Sustainability Award, winner of the Secondary Schools of the Americas area.
The project had the advice of Colciencias at the head of Klever Mejía, a professional interested in inventing solutions for his department. On occasions it has also articulated with entities in the region, given the case of Corpoguajira, which has been a learning laboratory for the generation of strategies that point to the conservation of the environment.
Mejía and part of his family, have been trained by the Green and Sustainable Business project led by Corpoguajira with the support of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development; opportunity that has allowed them to meet sustainability criteria and create a company based on good environmental practices.
The guajiros exalt the level of competitiveness in knowledge that the students of the school possess, taking into account that they were chosen finalists before 6 world regions and that to date obtained resources to continue in the strengthening and execution of this Sea Greenhouse.
The Zayed Sustainability Award was established in the 2008 as an annual reward for recognizing impactful and innovative sustainability solutions and honors the legacy of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding father of the United Arab Emirates and to date has benefited 335 millions of people around the world, thanks to 76 winners.
