In La Guajira we protect the green macaw

An alliance between Corpoguajira and Biota Foundation, it is proposed to carry out actions for the conservation of this species and implement awareness work to mitigate illegal purchase or sale of exotic bird, in market places and roads.

Green Guacamaya (Ara militaris), It is a species that faces a major anthropic pressure as ornamental bird or pet; It is on the red list of threatened species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature with Vulnerable, and therefore, must perform actions seeking the improvement of their populations and mitigate the factors that affect stability in the ecosystem.

The Red Book of endangered species in the department of La Guajira, places this species in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Protected Forest Reserve in Montes de Oca, in the Perijá and the Serrania de la Macuira.

In order to initiate actions for the conservation of the green macaw, Corpoguajira and Biota Foundation, articulated executed works to advance studies in Montes de Oca, allowing work implement species conservation, under the proposed management plan for the Reserve.

So far there have advanced the studies on the behavior of the species in the protected area; Additionally Garrapatero communities participated in workshops socialization of the project at the Agricultural Vocational School Carraipía (Maicao) and at school in Albania.

In the coming days, population studies will culminate and be visits to some educational institutions and communities that are located in the area of ​​influence of the Reserve. The tasks also include the collection of information on biology, Macaws ecology and populations in Montes de Oca, through a monitoring program within the Reserve.
