In La Guajira, a mangrove protection project will be developed as a measure to mitigate the effects of coastal erosion

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira is one of the four CARs in the country selected by the alliance between the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and the German Bank KFW, for the implementation of adaptation measures based on marine and coastal ecosystems, against coastal erosion in various areas of the Department.

This project contemplates updating the diagnosis and zoning of mangroves in specific sectors of the peninsula, which are considered a fundamental defense against this problem.

Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira, explained that recently a commission of the entity carried out reconnaissance work in the villages of Castilletes and Puerto López (Uribia), in order to finalize details and lines of action in the sectors where the execution of the project has been proposed, “We aim to reduce the socioeconomic vulnerability of our coastal communities, through resilient ecosystems, through actions of protection and conservation of these mangroves with enclosures that facilitate their natural restoration, specifically in Tukakas Bay”.

The official also specified that mangroves are recognized for their protective function against coastal erosion by stabilizing the land.; additionally contribute to carbon sequestration, they are rich in biodiversity and act as a filter against pollution. "A fundamental aspect of this ecosystem is its role as a natural barrier against natural phenomena such as tropical cyclones that form each year between the months of June and November", added.

As part of the work carried out in the upper Guajira, different meetings were held with the local communities, to socialize the scope of the project and the actions regarding the conservation of the marine-coastal ecosystem, consolidated by the Corporation.

It should be noted that among other proposed measures, The signage on land in the Sawairu regional protected area and the provision of eco-efficient stoves to reduce the consumption of firewood from the mangroves and help the environmental balance in these areas stand out..
