In Mayapo La Guajira, 24 sea turtles returned to their natural habitat

Among the specimens was a green turtle from 20 year old, captured by a group of fishermen incidentally and later voluntarily handed over to Corpoguajira for release.

A total of 24 sea turtles returned to their natural environment on the beaches of Mayapo (Manaure), as part of the biodiversity and wildlife conservation actions carried out jointly by Corpoguajira, Hocol, the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University and various environmental organizations.

Among the specimens was a green turtle (Chelonia mydas) of 20 year old, caught by a group of fishermen incidentally and later voluntarily surrendered for release, "We are allies and protectors of the turtles in La Guajira and we have a commitment to ensure their survival", Farid Redondo said, President of Fedepesca.

The remaining individuals were loggerhead turtles. (Caretta caretta), ranging between six and seven months. Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira, highlighted the joint work with the private company and thanked the fishermen of Manaure for joining this great conservation work, “We are very pleased with this act., which shows us a
once again that by joining efforts we can achieve excellent results in favor of our threatened fauna. We continue to strengthen these awareness processes and add community allies who today support these conservation strategies'.

It is important to note that the turtles were cared for and monitored in a removal process in which local communities participated., This is how Aminta Jáuregui explained it, marine biologist from the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, “All these people are betting on this conservation strategy, so that the turtles that we are introducing could reach larger sizes, that allow them to overcome many of their predators, for the sake of reaching adulthood and we bring that gift to the sea”.

The activity was part of the sustainability week coordinated by the company Hocol, “In La Guajira we are working for the protection of the cardinal guajiro and sea turtles, two umbrella species that we have selected in this territory contributing to the balance of its ecosystems. Together with Corpoguajira we carry out different actions for the conservation of the environment in the peninsula”, Adriana Rodriguez said, Hocol Environmental Document Assurance Professional.

Meanwhile, Julio Vega, Deputy Director of Environmental Management, explained that in La Guajira live four of the seven species of turtles that exist in the world, “These populations that frequent the department face great pressure due to the extraction and consumption of their meat, as well as the alteration of their feeding and nesting habitats”.

Finally, the environmental authority reiterated to the community the importance of continuing to increase awareness of threatened species and denouncing their possession, hunting and commercialization to promote its conservation and protection.
