INDIGENA WAYUU, ILLEGAL MARKETING PREVENTS SEA TURTLES

INDIGENA WAYUU, ILLEGAL MARKETING PREVENTS SEA TURTLES

By: Maria Angelica Egurrola H.

Marketing and turtle fishing is an illegal act. This marine species is included in the resolution 0192 of 2014, of the MADS where it informs that they are threatened, according to CITES in category EN, that is, in danger of extinction. Yesterday, 4 specimens of the green species (Chelonia Mydas) were seized at the Mayapo checkpoint in Manaure, thanks to the voluntary delivery of an indigenous of the Wayuu ethnic group, who in a responsible act of environmental awareness, found them in a sack, whose fate was illegal marketing by a member of their ethnic group.

The timely complaint of the indigenous, allowed the Tax and Customs Police to carry out the due process of seizure, supported by decree law 2811 of 1974 National code of natural resources, which indicates that all specimens of wildlife belong to the Nation and not individuals.

Therefore their illegal possession or trafficking is punished with financial and criminal sanctions according to the law. 1453 of 2011 Article 328 Illegal use of renewable natural resources Acts like these allow us to affirm that the community is committed to protecting the living species of our land and works to conserve the environment.

La Guajira is our land and deserves all our responsible care.
