alt

370 Wiwa indigenous people will benefit. The works are part of an alliance between Corpoguajira, Department for Social Prosperity , Pro-Sierra Nevada Foundation of Santa Marta, the Mayor's Office of San Juan del Cesar and the Governor of the Cabildo Wiwa.

The 20 December 2013, in the cultural village of Achintukua (San Juan del Cesar, La Guajira), Representatives of the Department for Social Prosperity will meet (DPS), Pro-Sierra Nevada Foundation of Santa Marta, Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira (Corpoguajira), Mayor of San Juan del Cesar and the Governor of the Cabildo Wiwa; to make effective the signing of the act that will begin the construction of a drinking water supply and treatment system and basic sanitation.

The above is contemplated within the framework of the Project “Environmental and Traditional Range of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta”, which aims to design and implement comprehensive supply solutions, water treatment and sanitation, for nine indigenous peoples settled on the highest coastal mountain in the world, thus contributing to the conservation, protection and sustainable use of natural resources.

With these works in Achintukua they benefit more than 370 Wiwa people of the community, who lives in the town.

Nowadays, Achintukua does not have an aqueduct system for the supply of drinking water., nor does it have a collection and treatment method for the correct management of liquid effluents.; Therefore, the construction of this infrastructure is a priority to guarantee the optimal supply of water resources in both quality and quantity., as a fundamental premise for achieving the social and economic development of its inhabitants, which will result in a better quality of life.

Resources for financing works in Achintukua, come from the Government of Spain, through the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation (FCAS), the Department for Social Prosperity (DPS), grant recipient, and Corpoguajira as national counterpart. The Pro-Sierra Nevada Foundation of Santa Marta, is the entity in charge of the execution of the Project.
