Officials of Ideam, Corpoguajira and the National Disaster Risk Management Unit will carry out, day 24 and 25 August, a cycle of workshops on the incidence of the winter wave and the hurricane season in La Guajira, during the second half of 2022.

The events will take place in Riohacha, the Cabo de la Vela, Nazareth y Siapana (Uribia). In each of them, work will be done with the competent institutions and organizations on climate predictions and recommendations in the face of this type of meteorological events..

According to forecasts, heavy rains are expected for the remainder of the year.; Nevertheless, the months of special attention will be September, October and November, influenced by the La Niña phenomenon.

Samuel Lanao Robles, General Manager Corpoguajira, explained that “as a preventive measure against these phenomena, we call for review, activate and strengthen the contingency plans of the Councils (Departmental and Municipal) Risk Management, since due to the vulnerability of the territory to these adverse weather conditions, the formation of tropical waves or the cyclones themselves may occur, gales and mini tornadoes”, added the official.

The environmental authority also recommends that the community in general be attentive and stay informed about the communications and reports issued in this regard by the Corpoguajira Early Warning System.. Equally, properly secure the roofs of the houses and check the trees that represent a threat due to their weak condition or that may fall on the electricity networks or homes.

Finally, The Corporation reiterates to the operators of shallow draft vessels, tourists and fishermen, closely monitor the evolution of weather and sea conditions and heed the recommendations given.
