The Cañas River as it passes through the village of Mingueo and up to its mouth in the Caribbean Sea, It has been presenting ramblings in the riverbed for several years that have notoriously affected this population and the surrounding lands on its margin. During the winter seasons there is lateral scour on the slopes and accumulation of coarse sediments on both banks, in addition, with floods and by the presence of plant material in the riverbed, Floods are also recorded in the properties located on both sides of the body of water.
Taking into account the problems that arise with each winter season in this sector of the department, Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, will start erosion control works, excavation, channel filling and cleaning that will allow the recovery of the fluvial geomorphology of the Cañas River in the neighboring sector and downstream of the urban area of Mingueo, which will reduce the digression and undermining and hence the damage caused by flooding.
The dynamics of the Cañas River has shown a change and degradation in recent years, as a consequence of anthropic phenomena that have triggered a greater contribution of sediments to the riverbed, new forms and processes as abandoned channels, levee break deltas, overflow and drain channels, temporary lagoons and beaches. This increasing degradation reflects a worsening of the conservation conditions of the middle and upper basin, but also in the lower basin, where to defend against floods, some owners build levees that divert and increase flooding to other sectors. Similarly, the construction of spurs and gabion walls within the channel, has generated new problems, as is the case of the undermining of the slopes on the terrace of Mingueo, process that has finished part of several riverside lots threatening, in some cases, the houses.
