La Guajira has 40.000 new hectares of protected areas

The new areas correspond to the Serranía de Perijá Soil Conservation District and the expansion of the DRMI Perijá. This achievement was possible through an alliance between Corpoguajira, USAID's Natural Wealth program and the Mayor's Office of El Molino

Through an alliance between Corpoguajira, USAID's Natural Wealth program and the Mayor's Office of El Molino, the declaration of the Serranía de Perijá Soil Conservation District was achieved and the extension of the DRMI Perijá. These two areas constitute 40.000 new hectares of protected areas for La Guajira.

This is how Samuel Lanao Robles explained it, in the mill, during the presentation of the results of said works, “we aim at the conservation of the tropical dry forest, of the soil and other natural resources and biodiversity present in this sector of La Guajira.

Now comes a fundamental task, which is the implementation of management plans for these areas., which contain the projects and actions to be developed to achieve the protection of these areas. Our sincere thanks to USAID, Natural Wealth and the municipality of El Molino, for this great inter-institutional management”.

In addition, He specified that the Serranía de Perijá Soil Conservation District will allow maintaining the coverage of dry and sub-Andean forest ecosystems. It is distributed among the municipalities of El Molino, Villanueva, Urumita and La Jagua del Pilar.

Ricardo Sanchez, Director of the USAID Natural Wealth Program; George Lottery, of Natural Wealth; Samuel Lanao Robles, Director of Corpoguajira and Juan Pablo Vega, Mayor of El Molino, during the act of socialization of the results of the project through which the new protected areas of La Guajira were established.

Regarding the DRMI Perijá, will be expanded by more than 18.000 hectares. The Humboldt Institute has already granted its previous concept; which is why in the next few days the Board of Directors of Corpoguajira, will make his statement official. Some of the conservation goals are: preserve and recover springs and springs located in the upper and middle basins of the Seco streams, Caurina and Magalote and the Cerrejón and Palomino rivers. Likewise, protect the natural elements that are cultural determinants for the ethnic communities settled in the area.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Sanchez, Director of the USAID Natural Wealth Program, indicated that "all the work carried out in recent years allows us today to have two new very important areas for the Perijá mountain range, which in addition to contributing to protect the ecosystem, will serve for the connectivity of Montes de Oca and Perijá, with which we can ensure that the communities can continue living with the dry forest; This is how we bet on a better future for this region that is so important for the country”.

Finally, John Paul Vega, Mayor of El Molino, argued that "the management carried out is essential to deliver to the new generations a biodiverse forest in a perfect state of conservation. As a municipality and as a region we have achieved excellent results”, pointed out.
