Conservation of protected areas of the department is one of the pillars of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, It is therefore essential rehabilitation of vegetation cover for the restoration of the structure and functionality as in the case of Protective Forest Reserve Manantial de Cañaverales which is part of the ecosystem heritage of the municipality of San Juan del Cesar.
By managing Corpoguajira in the Manantial seeks to rehabilitate 144 hectares of 957 hectares comprising booking, by a plastic insulation that protects and guarantees poles while reforest.
To date they have been executed 29 kilometers insulation to protect areas of interest against stressors that prevent natural regeneration and / or development of plants that will be planted once the rains begin in the area.
Within the framework of social responsibility implemented by the Corporation, the project has been guaranteed employment generation in the communities Corralejas, Cañaverales, Paloquemao and Montecristo, It is the inhabitants of these populations in developing essential part of the activities to be performed under the contract.
Since in the department there was a forest nursery certified by the Colombian Agricultural Institute – ICA, Consortium Promanantial Cañaverales as executor of rehabilitation work of Manantial decided to mount the nursery for the production of plant material for active restoration 144 hectares following the guidelines established in Resolution No. 2457 of 2010 Colombian Institute of Agriculture to proceed with the respective registration, thus complying with the regulations and requirements of Corpoguajira.
The 3 September this year, by resolution No. 31454 the 2018, the Colombian Agricultural Institute ICA granted registration as a producer of seedlings for forestry purposes to Vivero Manantial, , this becomes the first tree nursery with ICA registration in the department of La Guajira.
Currently are producing species such as Ceiba Tolua (Pochota quinata), Oak (Tabebuia rosea), polvillo (Handroanthus Serratifolia), Mahogany (Swettenia macrophylla), cedar Rosado (Cedrela odorata), Yaguaro (brasiletto soft), Fino heart (Platymiscium pinnatum), Caracolí (anacardium high) y Guaimaro (Poulosenia armata).
