NINE SEA TURTLES RELEASED AFTER BEING SEIZED IN CARRIZAL

The individuals were seized in the coastal area of the Uribia municipality by the National Police and the National Army, who made them available to the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira.

Riohacha, 31 August 2020

Nine sea turtles, five of the species Eretmochelys imbricata (hawksbill turtle) and four Chelonia mydas (green turtle) They were released after being assessed and receiving veterinary attention from professionals from Corpoguajira and the Fundación Casa Ecológica. The individuals were examined, received administration of antibiotics and a procedure was performed to remove the parasites embedded in the shell.

Although they presented dehydration product of time outside the sea, the animals were in good condition, Therefore, it was decided to release them after the stabilization of some individuals who presented eye involvement, fins and carapace due to the extraction of their natural environment and manipulation by the offenders involved.

The seized species are classified as Critically Endangered due to the significant reduction in their population and the deterioration of their habitat, which creates an imbalance in the marine-coastal territory.

It should be noted that Corpoguajira declared the largest marine grass protected area in the country, This marine element is the food par excellence of sea turtles and they have their greatest presence on the coasts of Manaure and Uribia, including the Carrizal area, area where the reptiles were seized on this occasion.

Corpoguajira invites the community to continue increasing sensitivity towards endangered species, report ownership, hunting and sale to promote the conservation and protection of natural resources, especially those species that are threatened.
