The students of the educational institution “Am Happy” (Riohacha), They were in charge of freeing the Caribbean Sea 30 turtles (3 months old), of the species Caretta-caretta.

The initiative arises from the request made by the institution to the Corporation, with the purpose of generating in minors and parents, a culture of protection and conservation of this species that is in danger of extinction throughout the world since 1996, according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

The turtles released, They are part of the “Sponsor a turtle” program of Corpoguajira that, through conservation strategies, encourages minors and adults to ensure the care of each of the species.

For that, The entity carries out beach monitoring, avoiding the looting of eggs by natural predators and their breaking due to the compaction of the land and the anthropic action carried out in this area. These species are an essential piece for ecological balance and a fundamental link in the food chain of their environment..

It should be noted, of the seven species of sea turtles that currently inhabit the world's oceans, four of them (Carey, Caretta-caretta, Green and Lute) They migrate to the coasts of La Guajira to begin their spawning (egg laying). This is because the beaches of the department have the optimal conditions for this process and also, because in the region there is the 80 % percent of seagrass that serves as food.

At different times of the year, The Corporation releases neonates when they meet the weight conditions. So far from 2016, more than 3 thousand turtles in the atlantic ocean.
