Corpoguajira as the highest environmental authority protects the wildlife that inhabits the department, on this occasion protecting the raccoons found a few days ago by workers from the Cerrejón company in Puerto Bolívar.

Our commitment goes beyond recovering species, We know that these individuals faced a long test of survival in arid ecosystems other than their natural habitat, since they are usually found in humid areas or close to an influx of water, this time three raccoons were found (female, male and calf) in the facilities of Puesto Bolivar while operators were in search of a needle alligator.

This species (Procyon Lotor) is a native of North America, many years ago they were alarmingly distributed throughout Germany, are characteristic for their dark coloration around their eyes, have a tail in dark and light colors alternating like rings. Raccoons have 40 teeth adopted by an omnivorous diet being able to feed on small insects, dragging seeds through the forest and with great resistance to live.

The recovered raccoons embarked two and a half years ago in Germany and the moment the ship made a stop in Puerto Bolívar they accidentally got off, adapting to the desert conditions that La Guajira offered.

At Present, the parents and their young are under the protection of Cerrejón with the supervision of Corpoguajira, entity that authorized to carry out tests to determine if they suffer from any parasite or abnormality in their health, these threw that they are completely healthy raccoons.

However, Genetic tests were carried out to corroborate which region they belong to and do everything possible to relocate them after rehabilitating them in the care center, in our department we can find this species in the mangroves of the municipality of Dibulla.
