*Mouth of the Ranchería River

After a report of dead fish on the shore of the beaches of Riohacha, the evaluation panel, control and monitoring of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, carried out an inspection visit in which a group of dead fingerling fish was found.

 

The death suffered by the fish was due to a natural phenomenon that occurs every year when the mouth of the Ranchería River opens and the two waters with different temperatures mix.. This fusion of liquids causes a decrease in dissolved oxygen in the water and an increase in turbidity., causing the entry of a large amount of total suspended solids (sludge) and increasing the turbidity in the sea, Decreasing the photosynthetic process by the non-penetration of sunlight.

Fish only tolerate one degree above and one degree below their ideal temperature, therefore, the sudden change in temperature added to the drop in dissolved oxygen and the other causes noted; is what causes the death of fish every year.

 

It is important to highlight that the phenomenon is a natural process that occurs every year and that serves so that birds such as Herons, Ibis, seagulls, Cormorants among other birds that inhabit the sector where the mouth of the River opened, eat these fish.
